To Carnauba,
or Not to carnauba, you decide:
Carnauba (car-NOW-ba)
is a vegetable wax obtained from the leaves of a Brazilian palm tree called
the “Tree of Life” (Copernica Cerifera). Pure Carnauba, in its natural
state, is harder than concrete. Professional Chemical Guys products are
engineered to not separate. The unique emulsification of quality raw
chemicals allows our products to retain integrity and always deliver the top
quality professional results our customers are accustomed to. Chemical Guys
unique Carnauba emulsification process is best summaries and defined as 3X
Carnauba, 2X Carnauba, and 1X Carnauba, the number signifies the best
products our premium #1 Brazilian carnauba can be mixed and emulsified with:
- 3XCarnauba-
Brazilian Grade A top Quality #1 Carnauba best emulsified with Sealants
and reactive silicones.
- 2XCarnauba-
Brazilian Grade A top Quality #1 Carnauba best emulsified with Waxes and
some glazes that contain synthetic wax or alternative waxes.
- 1XCarnauba-
Brazilian Grade A top Quality #1 Carnauba best emulsified with Water based
products such as quick detail sprays and Carwash Shampoos.
Carnauba is the hardest
natural wax and has lustrous composition that has a great affinity to water
giving it a nature derived ability to retain oil delivering excellent
gloss and protection.
Pure # 1 (Number
One Grade) Carnauba varies in color or shade from a very pale yellow to an
almost white, and some are even a yellowish (brown). Though the quality of
a pure #1 Carnauba does not differ greatly when comparing colors, scientist
have found that Grade A carnauba is the purest. Because Chemical Guys uses
carnauba for a large majority of products, only Grade A Brazilian carnauba
is used to assure top quality product is used behind the scenes to deliver
premium professional results in the final product. Paint experts agree that
Brazilian Carnauba is the wax of choice for the best automotive finishes.
Lets reduce the confusion about how carnauba
effects surfaces:
Carnauba is a natural plant derived or produced by-product, it has no
cleaning ability, hence used by itself and not in conjunction with other
chemicals it will not clean, attack, damage or cause any reaction with
a painted surface. Carnauba merely coats and provides a very hard
barrier over your car's surface to protect against airborne contaminants
such as acid rain, bugs, tar, road grime, salt, and bird droppings.
Carnauba also dramatically reduces paint oxidation by diffusing (refracting)
UV and infrared radiation from the sun. Many products like
Extreme Top-Coat Sealant are also enriched with extra added UV Blocking
agents that protect far longer then a wax and break down under much higher
heat conditions.
So what is wax?
Defined wax is: the actual substance, as in carnauba wax, beeswax or
paraffin, is an organic material which is solid at room temperature, melts
at a fairly low point and is not a polymer.
Waxes range of properties:
-
Hardness
-
Surface Shine and Reflective ability
-
Melting point for Carnauba (about 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit)
-
Water repellence
-
Protection-Resistance to breakdown
The
finishing coat of wax on a painted surface serves two basic purposes:
1) Protection -- Waxes serve as barrier offering protection against:
water spots, acid rain, contaminates and most importantly the damaging
effects of the sun. Wax coats the paint and protects it so that the elements
of contamination attack the wax and not the paint surface. Wax prevents acid
rain, vehicle exhaust and commercial industrial fallout from corroding the
paint's surface. Wax achieves these duties by improving mar and offering a
slip resistance, that prevents dirt and dust from abrading the paint
surface. Most oxidation occurs then oxygen accompanied by water, acid rain
or humidity penetrate through micro tiny wholes in your paints surface and
allow oxidation to occur. Many new and newly painted cars have some
micro tiny wholes in the paint, and often times when you use a clay bar, it
lifts and pulls oxidation out of the paint and leaves a micro tiny whole
where the oxidation was before. These wholes need to be filled and wax
offers a great surface sealant for these wholes. For added surface
protection it is recommended that a coat of sealant is applied over the wax
or even before the wax. Though some sealants like
magic seal are wax based, others like
Extreme Top-Coat Sealant are reactive silicone based sealants that are
enriched with carnauba to offer superior protection coupled with the shine
of carnauba wax.
2) Shine -- Waxes help improve the reflection of light off the car,
making the finish look brighter, smoother and more attractive.
